Different shoe size systems

Shoe size systems differ in several ways. Why this happened is obvious. In the course of the industrial development, different methods and working methods developed, which for example led to differences in the calculation of the length. In addition, there are the different length measurements. For continental Europe these are the centimeters and millimeters and for Great Britain and the USA they are inches and inches, as the units of measurement on which the conversion is based.

Depending on which shoe size system is used, it is important to know how to measure. Depending on the shoe size system, the average length, the inner length or the last length of the foot forms the basis for the conversion.

However, let us first discuss the Euro shoe size common in Germany.
The Continental Size forms the basis in Europe (except the UK). Formerly referred to as the "Paris stitch", with a length of 6.67 mm, this corresponds to the normal stitch length of the double seam on a shoe.
The European size table starts with children's size 15, which corresponds to an inside length of the shoe of 10 cm. 1 stitch more, means one shoe size more, therefore there were originally only "whole" shoe sizes and no intermediate sizes.

In the EU, D, F, I, etc., the following rule of thumb is used for calculation:
Foot length (in cm) + 1.5 cm extra x 1.5
It should be noted that Italian shoes lack the addition of 1.5cm.

Example: A foot length of 28cm corresponds to shoe size 44.
28cm + 1,5cm x 1,5 = 44,25

Why is the shoe size converter useful?

But it gets complicated when importing shoes from the UK or the USA, for example. The English and Americans do not agree on shoe sizes.
The English shoe size 1 starts at 8.466 inches with a further gradation of 1/3 inches each.
The US shoe size system, however, starts 2.116 millimeters further. The following system is then the same, but the dimensions are completely different.
Customers in these two countries therefore need shoe size tables just to convert inches to inches.

Why these differences?

Great Britain depends on the "English Size" in the unit of measurement inch, also called Barleycorn. This corresponds to a length of 8.46 mm. Half the size with a length of 4.23 mm.
There are different size tables for children and adults. The tables for children start with size 0 (corresponds to 12 Barleycorn = 10.16 mm) and end with size 13 ½. For adults with size 1, 26 corresponds to Barleycorns (22 cm) and ends with size 14 (33 cm). A British shoe size 7 thus corresponds approximately to an American shoe size 8.

Calculate shoe sizes in UK and USA

Great Britain:
The shoe size is calculated from the last length (in cm) ÷ 2,54 × 3) - 25

USA:
The shoe sizes are calculated according to the following rule of thumb:
men size = ( last length in cm ÷ 2,54 × 3) - 24
Ladies size =( last length in cm ÷ 2,54 × 3) - 23
